GENERAL INFORMATION

Vietnam, with a coastline of over 3,260 kilometers (km) and more than 3,000 islands and islets scattered offshore, plus up to 2,860 rivers and estuaries, has been geographically endowed with ideal conditions for the thriving fishery sector which currently exists.

Great potential of fishery sector in Vietnam is embedded in water bodies of 1.700.000 ha in which 811.700 ha freshwater, 635.400 ha brackish waters and 125.700 ha coves and 300.000 - 400.000 ha wetland areas might be employed for aquaculture development.

The Mekong River Delta in the south and the Red River Delta in the north have been used for wild catch fishing as well as extensive fish farming.

Shrimp and pangasius mostly farmed in the Mekong River Delta, in which, shrimp farmes located in coastal provinces such as Tra Vinh, Bac Lieu, Soc Trang, Ca Mau, Kien Giang, Ben Tre..

Pangasius farming is developing in many provinces in Mekong River Delta such as Can Tho, Vinh Long, Tien Giang, An Giang, Dong Thap, Soc Trang, Hau Giang, Tra Vinh....

Production in the fishery sector grew at an average rate of 7.05% from 1991 to 2000, and 10% from 2001 to now. The country produces annually over 6 million MT of fish, in which its landings reached 2.7 million MT and aquaculture reached 3.3 million MT. In 2015, total fisheries production reached 6.56 million MT, including 3.03 million tons from catching and 3.53 million tons from aquaculture.

Available fish sources

The southernmost province of Ca Mau is striving to achieve its goal of earning 1.1 billion USD from exporting aquatic products this year.

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) According to Kien Giang Department of Industry and Trade, in the first six months of this year, the province's export turnover reached over US$170 million, completing over 42% of the year plan, up 2.6% from the same period last year.

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) As of July 2017, Ca Mau Department of Agriculture and Rural Development in collaboration with CP Vietnam Corporation and Centre for Aquaculture and Fisheries Sustainability (ICAFIS) organized a training course on improving management process in shrimp culture for 40 super-intensive shrimp farming households in the province.

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) Under the scheme of Khanh Hoa Province (Vietnam) for 2016-2025, orientation to 2035, the area of aquaculture in Van Ninh district by 2020 expected to hit 200 hectares.

Vietnam could become self-sufficient in parent shrimp production from now to 2020.

The area of super-intensive shrimp farming in Ca Mau province, the country’s largest shrimp producer, has increased this year as the model offers high profits for farmers.

Vietnam’s aquaculture, fishery industry and seafood are on display at the seventh International Exhibition of Fishing and Aquaculture (SIPA 2017) which is underway in Oran, Algeria from November 9-12.

According to the report of Directorate of Fisheries, in the period, the total output of fishery was estimated at 3.328 million tons, up 4.2% from the same period last year. Of that, the capture output touched 1.66 million MT, up 4.7% and aquaculture production hit 1.67 million MT, increasing by 3.8% (brackish water shrimp volume hit 195,000 MT, up 7.7%; pangasius output was 550,000 MT, up 4.7%).

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) According to the latest figures from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, aquaculture production in June 2017 estimated at 450,000 MT, an increase of 3.4% over the same period last year, the figure in Jan-Jun 2017 was nearly 1.7 million MT, up 6.7% year on year.
